Rosa acicularis is a circumboreal species widely distributed in Eurasia (from Scandinavia to Japan) and North America. In open coniferous and mixed forest, forest edges, floodplains, meadows, thickets, and clearings; 100-2,800 m. Colony-forming shrub. Stems erect, 0.5-2.5 m tall; bark pale brown or reddish brown, densely covered with stiff bristles and thorns. The leaves are pinnate, with 3-9 leaflets; the leaflets are ovate, with serrated margins. The flowers are single or in corymbs; five lanceolate sepals, and five broad, rose or pink petals. R. acicularis blooms in late May-July. The fruit is a drupe (rose hip), orange-red to bright red when ripe.
